The sliding scale: a tool for economic justice

This sliding scale is a tool that allows for these services to be accessed at multiple price points based on individual economic circumstances. It acknowledges that financial circumstances and income should not be the only determining factor in whether someone can access services. Success of a sliding scale relies on truthfulness and accountability. I ask clients and potential clients to be honest about their economic circumstances. Growth and depth work require a foundation of honesty and trust.

How to think about this scale: Please consider the difference between a sacrifice and a hardship. If paying for this service would be difficult, but not detrimental, it qualifies as a sacrifice. You may have to cut back on spending in other areas, but paying for this service would not have a long term harmful impact on your life. If paying for this service would prevent you from taking care of basic needs (rent, food, transportation), then you are dealing with a hardship.

Where you fall on this scale:

  • The highest cost represents the true cost of the service, and is what would be charged to everyone in the absence of a sliding scale. If you are financially secure (ex: own property, have personal savings, do not worry about meeting basic needs), you have economic privilege and this would be the cost for you.

  • The middle cost represents folks who do not find themselves accurately reflected in either the highest or lowest cost. It acknowledges that paying full cost would prevent some from accessing these services. You may be in this range if you struggle to manage debt or build savings, have steady income, and can meet your basic needs (food, shelter, transportation) without spending significant time thinking of how to meet these needs. If you have access to other financial resources (friends, family members), please consider these resources before using the resource of the sliding scale.

  • The lowest cost acknowledges that some folks would be prevented from accessing services due to their economic circumstances. Folks represented here include those who may struggle to meet or maintain basic needs or live paycheck to paycheck. If this tier is still prohibitive to you, please reach out about financing or other options for accessing services.
