Frequently Asked Questions about Psilocybin Assisted Therapy

Updated: Sep 19

Why would I consider psilocybin therapy?
Some good reasons for pursuing this could include: you're interested in it and curious how it might benefit and support you; you've done a lot of therapy and are looking for something more/deeper; you've done psychedelics recreationally in the past and now want to try them in a supported environment; you've struggled with treatment resistant mental health concerns and nothing else has helped
Is this legal?
Yes! Psilocybin therapy is legal in the state of Colorado. The Natural Medicine Health Act (NMHA), approved in 2022, established a system for regulated psychedelic therapy, including psilocybin. The NMHA also allows for people to possess and grow psilocybin for personal use.
Who is psilocybin therapy for, and who might not be eligible?
The short answer: adults over 21 who meet minimum health and safety requirements
The longer answer: a thorough screening and assessment is completed for each individual interested in engaging in psilocybin therapy. This includes, but is not limited to, gathering information regarding health history, therapy history, experience with psychedelics, and intentions for pursing this as a treatment option. Some health or environmental conditions may be a contraindication for doing this work.
Do I need experience with psychedelics?
Not necessarily. While prior psychedelic experience can be helpful, we will do thorough preparation work prior to the administration session to ensure you feel safe and comfortable going into your psilocybin experience. Sometimes a longer preparation period is necessary and helpful, particularly if you've never engaged in therapy before and have no experience with psychedelics.
What does a session look like, and what might I experience?
Administration sessions can be 5-7 hours in duration. We spend time settling in and setting up your space for safety and comfort prior to administering mushrooms. Your facilitator is present for the duration of your experience. Often there can be a combination of time spent internally (laying down with eyeshades, music playing, you focused on your experience) and time engaged with your facilitator. You will discuss needs and preferences for your administration day during preparation work. Your experience may include, but is not limited to: shifts in internal perceptions, emotions, and your physical body; profound sense of connection to others and the universe; intense emotional experiences; more vivid experiences of your senses; sense of time and space temporarily dissolving; insights or images.
How many mushrooms will I take?
Mushroom dose is discussed between you and your facilitator and is specific to you, your current circumstances, past psychedelic experience, and type of experience you're looking for now. More is not necessarily always better! Safety is paramount, and we want to support you in having a deep, meaningful experience. Because there can be a lot of variability in mushroom potency, we go by milligrams of psilocin in determining dose, rather than grams of psilocybin.
Why would I pay to take mushrooms in an office when I can just go out into the woods and take them by myself?
This kind of structured support is for folks who want support, have a goal or intention in mind, and who want to know how much and what they're taking, as opposed to grabbing a handful and hoping for the best. Taking mushrooms in the trees with friends (or solo) can be absolutely wonderful and helpful. It can also be unknown, scary, intimidating or overwhelming. A structured environment with adequate preparation work and a focus on set and setting can support profound personal shifts.
Where do the mushrooms come from?
We currently have psilocybin products from Lost Garden Labs & Therapeutics based in Berthoud, CO. All our products come from licensed cultivators in Colorado and are tested regularly to determine potency. Information on available products, including mushroom strain and potency, will be discussed in preparation work.
What happens before an administration session?
We meet for preparation sessions, which includes a thorough intake covering mental and physical health history and current concerns. We spend time settling in, building a relationship, and exploring your intentions for working with psilocybin. We also talk through the process and make sure you feel safe and settled.
Can I buy mushrooms from you?
No. Sale of psilocybin is prohibited by law at this time. You can, however, legally grow your own!
How much does this cost?
Sliding scale is available for administration sessions based on your economic circumstances.
